Facials – how they work, how often you need one and where in the New Forest to get one done

My wonderful bridal clients will often ask my thoughts on facials, and whether having a regular treatment will improve the condition of their skin before the wedding day.  I LOVE a facial.  There’s something about the relaxing movements, gorgeous smelling oils and soft music that just makes me feel completely light headed for the rest of the day.  So I highly recommend getting one or two facials done before the wedding – if not just to chill out for an hour or so!

What I would say though is that facials, by their nature, are designed to bring toxins to the surface of the skin.  So don’t be surprised if a couple of days after your facial you have a breakout.  That’s why I often say to my bridal clients not to have a facial done too close to the wedding date.  2-3 weeks before the wedding is the perfect time frame.  The reason facials can cause breakouts is through the various applied massage techniques done by your therapist – the pressure stimulates blood to the surface of the skin, bringing with it all those naughty toxins.  Which is great if you’re wanting to have a thorough detox, not great if you have an important event coming up… so be warned!

A facial is essentially a multi-step skin treatment that is one of the best ways to take care of your skin.  A facial cleanses, exfoliates, and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion and can help your skin look younger.  You also receive advice on the best way to take care of your skin.  A facial works best when it is part of an on-going program of skin care.  Try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes. You may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne, especially at the beginning.  Otherwise, once a month is plenty.

Becky and her romantic new forest wedding at burley manor

I seem to be living at Burley Manor these days, but I don’t mind at all!  The venue and staff are second to none so it’s always a pleasure to return each weekend.  And I was so excited to do Becky’s bridal makeup, especially as the brief was ‘soft and romantic’ my favourite words when it comes to designing a breathtaking look!  Becky was just the perfect bride to design for – perfect skin, gorgeous deep eyes and such a lovely person to boot.  Really she was the whole package.  Becky was confident in my skills so pretty much gave me free reign over the makeup – I kept her eyes the main focus providing a pink, mauve and brown smokey eye.  I then lightly filled in her brows and applied a smooth foundation.  Topping off with a light contour, highlighter and pinky cheeks using Charlotte Tilbury products.  After setting the base, I then finished with Charlotte Tilbury’s lipstick in Pillow Talk x

Lucy & Marvin’s New Forest Wedding at Burley Manor

About a month ago now I had the enormous pleasure of doing the bridal makeup for Lucy on her big day.  Marvin (Groom) and Lucy had decided to celebrate their wedding at the stunning hotel & barn Burley Manor, located in the New Forest Hampshire.

When I arrived to do Lucy’s makeup no one could find her as she was just happily pottering away setting up her decorations and cake – now that’s a chilled bride!  Lucy was also really relaxed when it came to her bridal design – she freely admitted that she knew very little when it came to makeup and didn’t wear much day-to-day, so I knew I had to be careful with the look and keep a lovely balance between natural & photographically ready.  And here we are… the beautiful end results – wonderfully captured by brilliant wedding photographer Albert Palmer x

How I created *that* makeup look for the Burley Manor Barn styled shoot…

The styled shoot for Burley Manor Barn hasn’t even been published yet, and already I am getting a stream of requests to re-create the look I did for model Sophie for brides next year – which is just incredible.  I am also asked how I did it!  So here is a little run through of the products I used for the shoot.

First I primed the eyes using my go-to eye primer, Urban Decay primer potion in anti-aging.  Next I used my current favourite eyeshadow palette – Rosie for Autograph in Deco Diamonds, and used the deeper colours for the crease of the eye and the highlighter on the brow bone.  Next I lined the eyes in Soap and Glory waterproof eyeliner in Brown and added No.7 Dramatic mascara, additionally applying false eyelashes in Eylure No.114.  Filling in the brows to finish the eyes.

For the base I used two facial primers, one by Smashbox and the other by Dr. Brandt.  Applying a bespoke foundation mixture I have created for Sophie on shoots (to allow her skin to breath)  I then used a little concealer by Rosie for Autograph, and a soft pink sheen highlighter on the tops of the cheeks by Benefit.  Lightly adding blusher and a touch of bronzer for warmth.  Applying setting powder, and a further shimmery setting powder completed the face.

The lips again were a bespoke colour I blended using Bobbi Brown’s professional lip palette (available only online)  You can create a similar look using MAC’s Love Lorn lipstick shade x

Preview of that Burley Manor Barn styled shoot…

Wow!  What a wonderful day yesterday was!

For a couple of months now I have been in the depths of organising a styled shoot at Burley Manor and Burley Manor Barn, located in the New Forest.  I knew exactly which local wedding suppliers I wanted to work with, to make my vision of a warm winter wedding styled shoot come together.  And boy, did they not disappoint!  Arriving all for 9am we began straight away getting to work on transforming the barn into a warm inviting place, along with getting Sophie our model ready with beautiful hair by Michelle Crosser and makeup by myself.  Once all ready, we then got Sophie into the first of two Victoria Kay wedding gowns from her 2017 collection available from Something Old Something New bridal boutique.  And began shooting in this gorgeous wedding venue – made possible by Gina their wedding co-ordinator at Burley.

The biggest triumph was Hayley from Sweetcheeks Bakehouse, who made us the most exquisite dessert table for our styled shoot.  Spending literally hours on perfecting every little detail – it was the star piece of the shoot.  We all had fun admiring it, and maybe having a sneaky taste or two – quality control of course!

We also had Joey from The Wild Fox and Tammy of Fundoo Weddings, providing us all with the most beautiful table decorations.  It really was not made possible without these two.  And of course, Az from Lemontree Photography providing us all with stunning photographs!!  Here are just a few to tease you! x

Summer wedding, bridal makeup and working with Big Bouquet Photography…

Recently I got the chance to design a bridal makeup look for a summer wedding, where Amy the bride, really embraced her wedding theme through every sense of the word.  I did a blog post a few weeks ago about Amy’s wedding and her bridal makeup, but after receiving these scrumptious images from her photographer Big Bouquet I thought I’d discuss her look in more detail and the inspiration behind her bespoke design.

I met Amy a few weeks before her wedding for a makeup trial, where she explained her wedding theme and showed me what she had planned for her hair and wedding dress.  From there I knew I had to do a combination of structure through the eye (as Amy’s eyes are incredible) with a warm complexion, ruddy cheeks and a stained lip.  Giving the whole look a sort of walking through the sunflowers feel.  So to do this I introduced a formal smokey eye using browns to ever so slightly soften the look, coupled with a warmer shade of foundation and cream blusher for the cheeks.  I then created a deep stain in the lips and added a moisturising lipstick to give it a loose look, rather than matte.

Amy loved the design, and I have to say if I were to get married again then is is most likely what I would choose as well.

I also got the chance to meet Amy’s wedding photographer for the day – Emma Davenport of Big Bouquet Photography.  Which was utterly amazing as I completely love her and her husband’s photography!  See Emma’s blog post for more on Amy and Neale’s wedding at Burley Manor Barn x
